Back on carpet install day, I mentioned a few of the 'next projects' we had in mind for our nursery including a pre-fab closet system build out. If your first thought goes right to Ikea's ever so popular PAX Closet System line, I'm right there with you! We originally designed and planned both our bedroom closets for Pax because I truly love how customizable it is and of course the low price point. Sadly, the parts needed for our specific configurations have stayed out of stock since before we moved into our house. Womp, womp.
I was really hoping to avoid the much larger price tag of custom built-ins and ended up finding a great pre-fab alternative to the Pax while killing time at my local Lowes! So we took a chance on this super customizable Closetmaid system as it had similar pieces to what I had chosen with my original Pax design. Here's what we've built so far...
We will be building a short base for the entire tower to stand on so that we can easily open that bottom drawer, but I'm already so happy with how it's coming together and the huge amount of storage we're gaining for all the tiny baby things! Once we get the tower secured to the base and the back wall, we will also be adding in four longer shelves with hanging rods on either side.
I wanted to make sure and note a few key differences with this system if you have been considering the Pax as well.
Drawer-Front Style
I've seen a lot of people using the PAX who will build custom drawer fronts to really finish off the look of the system. If you're looking for more of a finished front off-the shelf, the Closetmaid comes standard with these great shaker-style drawers already which definitely saves a ton of time and effort.
Hardware
These brushed nickel drawer pulls also come standard with the Closetmaid whereas the standard PAX operates as a hand-pull with no hardware. Again, had we gone with PAX, we would have added custom fronts and hardware anyway, so another win for time there. We went ahead and attached the provided hardware onto our drawers which is super simple and versatile to work with a lot of different home styles, but I am thinking we might swap the pulls out as this room comes together even more.
Customization
While the Closetmaid had all the pieces we needed for our more simple configuration, the line does have significantly less options than the PAX as far as customizing to your space. If you're wanting a few more bells and whistles or if you're working with a larger, more complex closet area, I would probably recommend the PAX.
Price Point
Overall, I would say these two systems are pretty comparable in price. The Closetmaid seems to be slightly higher per module, however, if you are looking to customize your PAX with any kind of drawer fronts, hardware, or adding in more of those fancy features, I would bet these come out pretty much even as far as price goes.
I'm basically twitching with excitement to start filling this closet with the clothes and accessories we've been collecting for our little Veit, so I'm hoping to get this wrapped up before the end of the week! I absolutely love watching every piece of this room come together.
